Today, singer-songwriter Safia Nolin unveils three songs available exclusively on Apple Music. First, she delivers a raw and dissonant cover of Habits (Stay High), originally by the Swedish pop singer Tove Lo. Safia also unveils two new versions of tracks previously featured on her EP SEUM (released on Bonsound in 2021). This time, she’s invited new collaborators on PLS (ft. C.Cole) and 1000 (feat. Totalement Sublime).
With her cover of Habits (Stay High), Safia Nolin pays tribute to Tove Lo, whom she greatly admires, and what she brings to the world.* I've always been a huge pop music fan and for me, Tove Lo is the epitome of all my Safia 2023 convictions*, says the singer-songwriter who now spends her time between Montreal and Paris. She is extremely feminist, inclusive, and I feel that there is a lot of creative research behind her art that is more similar to mine than that of Britney Spears, for example. She is the most relatable pop star of all time for me.
Since Safia’s songs are essentially stripped down, she thought it would be interesting to turn to beatmaker/producer C.Cole, as well as the electronic duo Totalement Sublime, to revamp the songs PLS and 1000. I discovered that it was possible to completely change the meaning and emotion of the song, explains the artist. I loved the experience and I feel like C.Cole and Totalement Sublime truly made my songs their own.
On May 23rd, Safia Nolin will perform at La Sotterenea in Montreal, in a double bill with Marissa Anderson, as part of an event presented by Arts in the Margins. You can also catch her live at Le Festif de Baie-St-Paul on July 23rd.
