After earning praise from Stereogum, BrooklynVegan and France Inter with the singles Le thé est prêt and Mariano (Jamais je ne t'oublierai), Population II now presents La Trippance, the third single from the album Maintenant Jamais, due out this Friday, March 28th, via Bonsound.
The album launch show, taking place on May 9th at Église Saint-Édouard in Montreal, is already sold out, but more dates are scheduled in the Magdalen Islands, Quebec City, Jonquière and Saint-Casimir. See the list below for details.
The song takes off with an intro built on the lingering sounds of a bass synthesizer and an altered Farfisa; the drums then accelerate and merge with jittery guitar chords to lay the foundations for one of Maintenant Jamais’ heaviest tracks. Singer-drummer Pierre-Luc Gratton delivers a remarkably powerful vocal performance, before the track climaxes with a protopunk-style solo, closing gently on an outro reminiscent of its opening.
Earlier in March, the three-piece band presented Carillon - Population II en concert. Directed by Dominic Vanchesteing and shot among massive concrete structures in the village of Carillon, Québec, the short film shows Population II performing under the eye of a camera that floats between the musicians and the brutalist monoliths.
